UPDATE: Suspect in B.C. cop shooting found dead

UPDATE (4:55 p.m.): The RCMP have confirmed that the suspect of a two-day manhunt has been found dead.

In a media release, Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said the body of the Sheldon Kyle Thunderblanket was found east of Revelstoke, within the area police were searching.

Police had been searching for Thunderblanket since an officer was shot and a car stolen during a routine traffic stop near Golden yesterday.

Moskaluk said a positive confirmation of identification and the exact cause of Thunderblanket’s death “is now the subject of a full investigation by the BC Coroner Service.”

Moskaluk said the cops delayed confirming Thunderblanket’s death “in order to ensure that next of kin notifications had been completed, as well as notifications to all the partner agencies who have a connection or interest in this case.”

British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office has been notified of the death, and the organization will now investigate if there is a connection between it and the actions of police.

The area around where Thunderbird was found will remain closed while police collect evidence.

UPDATE (12:52 p.m.): Sheldon Kyle Thunderblanket has been found. According to the City of Revelstoke, the suspect has been found and the RCMP are continuing to investigate.

ORIGINAL STORY:

BC RCMP are still searching for a suspect who allegedly shot an officer near Golden on Tuesday and is wanted in Saskatchewan for murder.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Sheldon Kyle Thunderblanket who is considered armed and dangerous.

On Wednesday morning, police confirmed he was allegedly driving was located late Tuesday night just outside of Revelstoke.

Traffic services, the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and General Duty officers all attended the area to search through the night. Still, the suspect has not been located.

Additional resources are being deployed to the area as search continue within a 4 kilometre area east of Revelstoke.

According to police, it is believed the suspect is wanted in connection with a murder and attempted murder out of Saskatchewan.

He is described as an Aboriginal male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 209 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

If you see him, do not approach him, and instead contact police immediately.

Traffic on Highway 1 is now open to single lane alternating traffic approximately 6 km east of Revelstoke and 26 km west of Golden.

The injured RCMP officer remains in hospital at this time.
