Lease for 25-bed Kamloops shelter extended for another year

The lease for the shelter at the former Stuart Wood School has been extended for another year.

According to a news release from the province the new lease will last until April 30, 2025 in partnership with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, the City of Kamloops and operator Out of the Cold (OOTC) foundation.

Last April, the province extended the lease for the 25-bed shelter, however, that lease was set to expire this spring.

The news release says the province, through BC Housing, is providing approximately $1.3 million annually for operations of the shelter.

People at the shelter have access to daily meals, laundry and shower facilities, case management support and health-care referrals.

Kamloops City Council authorized the use of the school for a temporary shelter in mid-August 2022 and the shelter opened for its first winter that November.

It joins several other shelter spaces in the city, including the 40 year-round spaces at the Emerald Centre on Victoria Street, the 50 spaces at Merit Place on Notre Dame Drive and the 41 spaces Moira house on Kingston Avenue.

Over 310 people are expected to use these spaces at some point this year, according to data collected during the 2023 Point in Time Homelessness Count.
