Free tire collection event happening in Kamloops today

Do you have extra tires laying around your yard that you’ve been meaning to get rid of?

Well, you get dispose of them for free on Saturday, May 11 during a tire collection event being hosted by the Tire Stewardship BC.

People can drop off their old or unused tires, on or off rim, between 9 am and 1 pm at Kal Tire at 788 Mount Paul Way.

“When the weather warms and the seasons change, so should your tires,” said Rosemary Sutton, Executive Director, Tire Stewardship BC, in a news release.

“When the temperature is regularly above seven degrees, it’s time to switch out your winter tires and store them covered in a cool, dry place or drop them off at one of our collection events so that they can be recycled.”

According to the not-for-profit, the tires are recycled and turned into “new, useful” products that can be used for things like playground surfaces, athletic tracks and commercial flooring and roofing supplies.

With the upcoming wildfire season, Sutton says that old tires shouldn’t be left outside as they can become a fire hazard.

She adds that old tires that collect rainwater can also be the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

In 2023, Tire Stewardship BC collected nearly 6,000 old and unused tires from tire collection events and since 1991, over 100 million tires have been recycled across the province.
