Samsung facing more issues, this time with ‘exploding’ washing machines

Just after recalling Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones due to explosions and fires, the company is once again in talks with the Consumer Product Safety Commision, this time over washing machines.

According to Samsung, they are working to address potential safety issues with their top-load washing machines manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016.

“In rare cases, affected units may experience abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or property damage when washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items,” they wrote, in a statement on their website.

Law firm Lieff Cabraser has launched a lawsuit in New Jersey alleging that some of the Samsung top-load washers have exploded within a year, a few months and even the day of installation for their clients.

They say units can reportedly explode without warning while a load is running, causing significant damage.

“It was the loudest sound. It sounded like a bomb went off in my ear,” 32-year-old plaintiff Melissa Thaxton of Dallas, Georgia, said. “There were wires, nuts, the cover actually was laying on the floor.

“I just remember covering my head and leaning towards my son and just screaming this scream that I didn’t even know I could scream.”

“The rod can slide right out,” explained lawyer Jason L. Lichtman. “And that’s what causes the washing machine to blow apart.”

Because of these issues, the company is recommending people used lower speed delicate cycle when washing these items.
